Sanofi and Orano collaborate on next-generation radioligand medicines

Sanofi and Orano Med are forming a new entity to develop next-generation radioligand medicines. The collaboration focuses on lead-212-based alpha-emitting therapies for rare cancers.

15 October 2026

Sanofi and Orano Med, a subsidiary of the Orano Group, have entered into an agreement to advance the development of radioligand medicines (RLTs), particularly those based on lead-212 (212Pb) alpha-emitting isotopes for rare cancers.

A new entity, operating under the Orano Med brand, will be established to combine Orano Med's expertise in radiopharmaceutical development with Sanofi's broader drug development capabilities. This partnership follows Sanofi's previous licensing agreement with Orano Med and RadioMedix concerning RLTs for rare cancers, including the AlphaMedix project.

Targeted alpha therapy utilizes biological vectors to deliver alpha-emitting radioisotopes directly to cancer cells. The short-range, high-energy alpha particles aim to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, offering a new precision medicine approach for certain rare cancers.

Orano Group CEO Nicolas Maes highlighted the societal impact of nuclear technology in healthcare, while Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson noted the collaboration's role in fostering innovation. Sanofi's investment will bolster Orano Med's capacity to accelerate its pipeline of 212Pb-based therapies, supported by a proprietary manufacturing process ensuring a scalable and independent global supply.
