Sanofi Beyfortus Reduced Infant RSV Hospitalizations by 82% in Real-World Study
Sanofi's Beyfortus significantly reduced hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants under six months by 82% compared to those receiving no intervention, according to new real-world data published in The Lancet.
Paris, France – Sanofi announced new real-world evidence showing its Beyfortus (nirsevimab) significantly reduced hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants. The study, published in The Lancet, found an 82% reduction in hospitalizations for infants under six months of age compared to those who received no RSV intervention.
The findings come from the ongoing NIRSE-GAL study conducted in Galicia, Spain, in collaboration with the Galician Directorate of Public Health. These interim results cover the 2023-2024 RSV season, the first following Beyfortus' introduction, and corroborate the consistent high efficacy and favorable safety profile observed in pivotal clinical trials.
The study reported no unexpected safety issues with Beyfortus use, consistent with previous clinical findings. The region of Galicia has now provided the first population-based, real-world evidence of Beyfortus' impact on preventing RSV disease in infants, showing a reduction in hospitalizations by almost 90% compared to previous RSV seasons.
"This achievement is the result of exemplary collaboration among scientists, industry, healthcare providers, and policymakers," said Federico Martinon Torres, Head of Pediatrics at Hospital Clínico Universitario Santiago and principal investigator of the NIRSE-GAL study. "This demonstrates the strength of all-infant immunization strategies against RSV."
