Sanofi has commenced Phase 3 clinical trials for its 21-valent pneumococcal vaccine candidate, concurrently expanding its collaboration with South Korea-based SK Bioscience.

The expanded agreement encompasses the development, licensing, and commercialization of next-generation pneumococcal conjugate vaccines targeting both pediatric and adult populations. The companies stated this move reinforces their commitment to combating pneumococcal disease.

Sanofi's 21-valent vaccine candidate marks the first pneumococcal vaccine with over 20 serotypes to enter Phase 3 studies in infants and toddlers. The company announced the Phase 3 program has begun, involving over 7,700 infants, toddlers, and young children across multiple global regions.

Under the terms of the expanded agreement, both companies will co-fund research and development expenses. Sanofi is providing an upfront payment of EUR 50 million to SK Bioscience, in addition to development and commercial milestone payments. Sanofi will lead global commercialization, except for South Korea, where SK Bioscience will retain exclusive rights.
