Sanofi Patient Story Highlights Resilience Amidst Chronic Kidney Disease
Sanofi has shared the story of Peio, who has navigated life with chronic kidney disease since childhood, undergoing multiple transplants and finding strength through an active lifestyle.

Sanofi has published a patient narrative focusing on Peio's journey with chronic kidney disease. Diagnosed at two years old with a rare form of the illness, Peio received his first kidney transplant at age nine and a second at age 11. At 27, he learned he would need a third transplant.
Peio, now 42 and working as a computer engineer, recounts that his mother became the donor for his third kidney transplant. He describes this as receiving life for a second time, contrasting it with his previous transplants from anonymous donors.
During his childhood, Peio experienced fatigue and anemia due to his condition. Despite hospital visits and dietary restrictions, his family strived to provide him with a normal upbringing. Facing the prospect of a third transplant and dialysis, Peio considered foregoing further treatment due to the demanding nature of the procedures.
The dialysis treatments were physically challenging. His mother's donation provided a new beginning, and Peio emphasizes that his illness does not define his life. He has embraced sports, including running and cycling, as a way to challenge himself and understand his body's capabilities, having completed half marathons and riding thousands of kilometers annually.
Peio expresses gratitude for the donation system, his medical team, and his family. Sanofi uses his story to illustrate that a diagnosis need not diminish joy or ambition, underscoring the role of medical care, family support, and personal determination in living with a chronic condition.
