Sanofi has presented data from a phase 2 clinical trial indicating that rilzabrutinib, an oral treatment, may reduce instances of loss of asthma control (LOAC) in adults with moderate-to-severe asthma. The findings, revealed at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference, showed a relative risk reduction in LOAC events of up to 36% among participants over a 12-week period.

Approximately 50% of asthma patients remain uncontrolled despite current standard-of-care treatments, leading to persistent symptom burden. The proof-of-concept study observed meaningful improvements in patient symptoms as measured by the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ-5) beginning at week two.

Regarding safety, the trial reported no new findings, such as hemorrhage or atrial fibrillation, which are sometimes monitored in similar drug classes. The company intends to transition the therapy into a phase 3 development program to assess its efficacy in a larger, twice-daily dosing regimen.
