Paris – Pharmaceutical giant Sanofi has reported robust financial results for 2021, with increased sales and earnings growth positioning the company to allocate more resources to research and development (R&D).

In the fourth quarter, Sanofi's sales grew by 4.1% and business earnings per share (EPS) increased by 9.8%, both measured at constant exchange rates. For the full year 2021, sales rose 7.1% and business EPS climbed 15.5%. The company's operating income margin reached 28.4%. Sanofi achieved cost savings of €2.41 billion over 2020 and 2021, a significant portion of which is being reinvested to drive growth.

The Specialty Care business unit emerged as the largest by sales, propelled by Dupixent's performance, which saw a 53.1% increase in sales during the fourth quarter. For the full year, Dupixent generated €5.25 billion in sales. The Vaccines division experienced a 6.5% sales decrease in Q4 but recorded a 6.8% overall growth for the year. General Medicines' core assets saw a 2.1% sales increase.

Sanofi bolstered its R&D pipeline through strategic acquisitions, including immuno-oncology company Amunix and biotechnology firm Origimm. Dupixent secured new approvals and advanced in clinical trials for conditions such as asthma and eosinophilic esophagitis. The company anticipates that its 2022 business EPS will grow by a low double-digit percentage at constant exchange rates.

CEO Paul Hudson highlighted the strong momentum of Dupixent and the strategic shift with Specialty Care becoming the leading business unit. He also emphasized the company's progress in R&D, evidenced by multiple new drug candidates advancing through clinical phases and a commitment to further pipeline expansion.
