Sanofi to Manufacture Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Doses
Sanofi has entered into an agreement with Moderna to manufacture doses of the company's COVID-19 vaccine. The collaboration aims to increase global supply and will involve fill and finish operations at Sanofi's US facility.
French pharmaceutical company Sanofi has announced an agreement to assist Moderna in manufacturing its COVID-19 vaccine. The collaboration will see Sanofi perform fill and finish services for up to 200 million doses of Moderna's vaccine at its facility in Ridgefield, New Jersey, USA.
Production is slated to begin in September 2021, with the goal of bolstering the global supply of COVID-19 vaccines during the ongoing pandemic. This move marks Sanofi's third significant contribution to vaccine manufacturing support for other companies.
Previously, Sanofi committed to manufacturing 125 million doses for BioNTech's vaccine intended for the European Union and will also support Johnson & Johnson's vaccine production. This makes Sanofi the sole major pharmaceutical manufacturer actively supporting the production of three distinct COVID-19 vaccines.
Alongside its manufacturing support role, Sanofi continues to advance its own COVID-19 vaccine development programs. These include a recombinant protein-based vaccine candidate developed with GSK and an mRNA vaccine candidate in partnership with Translate Bio. Clinical trials for both of Sanofi's vaccine candidates are currently underway.
