Sanofi to spin off consumer healthcare unit in strategic shift
Sanofi plans to separate its consumer healthcare division into a standalone, publicly traded company by late 2024 to focus on biopharma.
Pharmaceutical company Sanofi has announced plans to separate its consumer healthcare business into a distinct entity, marking a shift toward a pure-play biopharmaceutical business model. The company aims to complete the separation by at least the fourth quarter of 2024, with the new entity expected to be headquartered in France.
CEO Paul Hudson stated that the move is designed to optimize capital allocation and enhance the company’s ability to invest in research and development. By streamlining its structure, Sanofi aims to accelerate innovation in fields such as immunology and neuro-inflammation, where the firm currently has multiple candidates in late-stage development.
This announcement follows the conclusion of the company’s multi-year "Play to Win" strategy, which began in 2019. During this period, Sanofi successfully scaled its immunology drug Dupixent and introduced several new molecular entities to the market. The company intends to implement new cost-saving measures to provide further funding for its R&D initiatives.
Sanofi reiterated its 2023 financial guidance and provided preliminary outlooks for 2024 and 2025. The company maintains that the separation will allow both the biopharma business and the consumer healthcare unit to pursue their respective long-term growth objectives more efficiently.
