Saronic to Build Next-Generation Shipyard in Brownsville, Texas

Saronic announced on July 16, 2026, that it has chosen Brownsville, Texas, as the site for its new Port Alpha shipyard. This next-generation facility is designed to enhance American maritime capabilities and expand the nation's shipbuilding capacity.

The Port Alpha project represents a planned investment of over $3 billion. The objective is to establish one of the world's most advanced shipyards, engineered for software-defined shipbuilding and autonomous maritime systems. The development is projected to generate more than 10,000 direct jobs and substantial economic benefits for Cameron County and the State of Texas, marking it as one of the largest economic undertakings in modern Texas history.

Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with the facility expected to commence operations in 2028. This decision aligns with broader U.S. government initiatives aimed at revitalizing the domestic shipbuilding industry for national security objectives. Port Alpha is positioned to address these needs by increasing domestic production and closing the gap with foreign shipbuilding capabilities.

Brownsville was selected following a year-long, nationwide site evaluation process. Factors such as workforce availability, infrastructure readiness, and expansion potential were key considerations. The shipyard will initially occupy 835 acres, with provisions for expansion up to nearly 4,400 acres, enabling the construction of vessels up to 850 feet long. Future expansion could accommodate vessels exceeding 1,200 feet.

The initiative also aims to bolster the shipbuilding workforce through collaborations with state and local entities, including educational institutions, to develop necessary training and apprenticeship programs.
