Sarvam AI enters agreement to develop AI systems for Indian Armed Forces
Indian AI firm Sarvam AI has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff to develop artificial intelligence projects for the military.
Sarvam AI has established an umbrella framework with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) to deploy AI applications across India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force. The company’s newly formed division, Chanakya, will oversee the defense-related work, utilizing Sarvam’s existing foundation models to build operational and decision-support systems.
The agreement focuses on creating a shared technical stack for all three services, covering areas such as sensor-to-shooter data fusion and geospatial perception systems. According to the company, this collaboration is intended to align with the Ministry of Defence’s strategy to develop indigenous AI capabilities on sovereign infrastructure.
Despite the announcement, key details regarding contract value, funding sources, and project duration remain undisclosed. Furthermore, neither the Ministry of Defence nor HQ IDS has independently confirmed the agreement, leaving the project’s scope reliant solely on Sarvam’s disclosure. Sarvam, which achieved unicorn status in 2026 with $234 million in Series B funding, previously partnered with the Indian government under the IndiaAI Mission.
