SAS explores electric aircraft for regional routes

Stockholm, Sweden – SAS, the Scandinavian airline, has signed a Letter of Support with Heart Aerospace regarding the potential addition of the ES-30 electric aircraft to its regional fleet. This agreement could represent a significant step in SAS's sustainability efforts, aiming to facilitate zero-emission flights on routes within Scandinavia.

The ES-30 aircraft is expected to be certified for commercial flights by 2028. It is designed with a fully electric range of 200 kilometers. A hybrid system provides flexibility, extending the range to 400 kilometers with 30 passengers, or up to 800 kilometers with 25 passengers, including necessary reserves.

SAS has been collaborating with Heart Aerospace since 2019 to advance the development of electric aviation. "The electric aircraft will be a great complement to our existing fleet serving shorter and thinner routes in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, in a more sustainable way," said SAS President & CEO Anko van der Werff.

SAS will also join Heart Aerospace's new Industry Advisory Board, contributing to the definition of requirements for the ES-30. This partnership is seen as a crucial step towards achieving a more sustainable aviation sector.
