SAS marks 70 years since first commercial polar flight
November 15, 2024, marks the 70th anniversary of SAS becoming the first airline to operate a commercial flight over the North Pole. The route between Copenhagen and Los Angeles optimized long-haul travel efficiency.

On November 15, 1954, SAS established a new standard in aviation by operating the first commercial flight over the North Pole. Connecting Copenhagen and Los Angeles, the route significantly reduced flight times and fuel consumption compared to traditional North Atlantic trajectories.
Achieving the flight required four years of preparation to overcome the technical challenges posed by the harsh Arctic environment. Initial safety protocols included providing passengers with specialized gear and survival documentation for potential emergency landings in polar conditions.
SAS CEO Anko van der Werff noted that the route improved global connectivity and cultural exchange. Copenhagen remains the central hub for the airline's network, and the connection between the two cities continues to operate today.
