SAS places record order for 55 Embraer aircraft to modernize fleet
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has placed a record order for 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, with options for 10 more, to update its fleet and enhance regional connectivity.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has finalized a significant order for 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, including options for an additional 10. This marks the largest jet aircraft order placed directly with a manufacturer by SAS since 1996. The deal, valued at approximately $4 billion excluding options, is central to the airline's long-term fleet renewal strategy.
Deliveries of the new Embraer jets are slated to begin in late 2027 and will continue over approximately four years. SAS stated the acquisition aims to increase operational efficiency, reduce emissions, and support future growth from its Copenhagen hub and across its wider network.
According to SAS President & CEO Anko van der Werff, the Embraer E195-E2 is chosen for its performance and fuel efficiency. The aircraft is expected to optimize SAS's operations within Scandinavia and Europe, allowing for increased frequencies and network flexibility.
The new fleet will be equipped with Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines, which promise significant reductions in fuel burn, emissions, and noise compared to older aircraft. SAS also highlighted the E2 aircraft's capability to operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the future, aligning with the company's environmental goals.
