SAS receives first Airbus A350 aircraft
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has officially added its first Airbus A350 to its fleet, the initial unit of eight ordered. The aircraft will commence long-haul operations in January 2020.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has officially welcomed its first Airbus A350 into its fleet, marking the beginning of the introduction of eight new long-haul aircraft. The A350 is set to enter commercial service on January 28, 2020, offering passengers enhanced comfort and a more sustainable travel experience.
The new aircraft features updated cabin designs with new seat models and customized SAS solutions, aimed at improving passenger comfort. Its advanced aerodynamic design and technology contribute to significant improvements in operational efficiency and fuel economy. SAS stated that the A350 reduces fuel consumption by up to 30 percent compared to the aircraft it replaces, consequently lowering carbon emissions.
SAS President and CEO Rickard Gustafson highlighted the A350 as a milestone in the fleet's renewal, emphasizing its role in reducing environmental impact. The external noise footprint of the aircraft is also reported to be reduced by 40 percent. These advancements position the A350 as a key component of SAS's strategy for a more sustainable and competitive future.
The first A350, named "Ingegerd Viking," will be based at SAS's hub in Copenhagen. During its first year of operation, it is scheduled to fly seven routes, including services to Chicago, Beijing, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and San Francisco. SAS continues its fleet modernization program, with additional Airbus aircraft deliveries planned through 2023.
