Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced on April 8, 2024, a significant shift in its airline alliances, transitioning from Star Alliance to SkyTeam. The change is scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2024.

SAS will continue its membership and operations within the Star Alliance framework until August 31, 2024. Following this date, customers will begin to experience benefits with most airlines affiliated with the SkyTeam alliance.

This transition means that SAS EuroBonus members will gain access to loyalty benefits comparable to those currently offered with Star Alliance carriers, but now across most of SkyTeam's network. SAS is reportedly in advanced negotiations with SkyTeam and its member airlines to establish comprehensive commercial relationships, aiming to provide customers with access to 19 new airlines and over 1,060 global destinations.

Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS, stated the company is progressing with its alliance transition to offer new destinations and loyalty program benefits. He highlighted the company's focus on ensuring a smooth transition for customers and EuroBonus members, a process managed in close cooperation with both Star Alliance and SkyTeam over the past six months.

All existing Star Alliance customer benefits, including the earning and redeeming of EuroBonus points and lounge access, will remain valid through August 31, 2024. EuroBonus will continue to be SAS's loyalty program following the alliance change.
