Satlyt Raises $8M for Satellite AI Processing

Satlyt, a company founded by former Google and SpaceX product manager Rama Afullo, has raised $8 million in seed funding. The investment is intended to facilitate the direct processing of artificial intelligence (AI) on satellites.

The company plans to offer open software designed to operate on satellites from various manufacturers. This approach contrasts with the closed systems employed by some industry players, such as SpaceX.

Afullo, who previously worked in Google's cloud computing business, identified a need for more efficient data processing capabilities in space. Satlyt's technology aims to enable data to be processed closer to its point of collection, reducing latency and the need for extensive data transmission to Earth.

The newly acquired capital will be used to expand the company's team and accelerate the development of its technology. The ultimate goal is to establish a standard for "orbital computing," supporting the broader deployment of AI applications in space.
