Saxony-Anhalt Interior Ministers Warn of Potential AfD Government Rule
Interior ministers from several German states have raised concerns about the implications of a potential AfD-led government in Saxony-Anhalt. The focus is on information sharing protocols with security agencies.

Interior ministers from multiple German states have voiced significant concerns regarding the potential consequences of a government led by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Saxony-Anhalt. The primary worry revolves around whether federal and other state authorities could continue sharing sensitive security information with Saxony-Anhalt if the AfD were to gain control of the state's Interior Ministry.
Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) plans to place this issue on the agenda for the upcoming conference of interior ministers. Brandenburg's Interior Minister Jan Redmann (CDU) described the situation as a "concrete danger," and Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) indicated preparations for a "worst-case scenario." The core of the concern is that if a party designated as right-wing extremist takes charge of key security apparatuses, it could jeopardize the trust necessary for intelligence sharing.
Timo Reinfrank, head of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, an organization focused on combating right-wing extremism, stated that if the AfD were to control the Interior Ministry, it would provide "a legitimate reason to consider whether to exclude Saxony-Anhalt from data exchange."
The Amadeu Antonio Foundation has developed a scenario analysis for Saxony-Anhalt, drawing upon AfD's party platforms, parliamentary proposals, public statements, and international examples of authoritarian governance. While the foundation clarifies this is a potential scenario and not a definitive forecast, it serves as a significant warning about possible future developments.
