SBOA Tenant Insurance Cuts Theft Costs by 52% Per Unit

Self-storage facilities insured by SBOA Tenant Insurance and utilizing the StorageDefender system have reduced per-unit theft-related costs by an average of 52 percent, according to an analysis released September 3, 2026, in Las Vegas. The study, covering 33 insured facilities, also found a 37 percent decrease in reported theft claims per 1,000 insured units.

SBOA Tenant Insurance, previously recognized as the Best Tenant Insurance provider in the Inside Self-Storage Best of Business Awards, conducted the analysis. The research compared theft-related claims costs and incident frequency before and after the implementation of the insurance and security solutions.

The findings indicate a significant improvement in security and the management of associated expenses. The reduction in theft claims may be attributable to enhanced security technology and increased tenant awareness of insurance coverage.

The analysis specifically examined theft costs, which can represent a substantial portion of operational expenses for storage facilities. The combined approach of insurance and security systems proved effective in mitigating these risks.
