Scandic to Open Underground Hotel in Central Stockholm
Scandic Hotels Group is constructing a new 135-room Scandic Go hotel underground in central Stockholm's Drottninggatan. Construction begins this year and is slated for completion in 2027.

Scandic Hotels Group announced plans to build a new 135-room Scandic Go hotel underground in central Stockholm, on Drottninggatan. The project, scheduled for completion in 2027, involves partially converting an existing building from retail and storage space into a mixed-use property with a hotel, offices, and retail.
The hotel comprises 135 windowless rooms spread across three basement levels. Public areas and staff facilities will have window access. Scandic positions this as part of its growth strategy, aiming to strengthen its presence in the economy segment. The hotel is designed to offer a quiet and tranquil experience, shielded from city noise, catering to budget-conscious travelers.
Property owner Axfast views the project as a way to develop a more vibrant city around the clock, emphasizing sustainability by utilizing existing structures. The hotel aims for Bream in Use Excellent certification, with its operations adhering to the Nordic Swan Ecolabel standards.
Scandic notes that windowless rooms are a deliberate choice implemented at several of its hotels, with an emphasis on materials, lighting, and acoustics to create a comfortable environment. The company reports a growing interest in this type of accommodation.
