Scandic to Open Underground Hotel in Stockholm City Center

Scandic Hotels Group, in partnership with property owner Axfast, has announced plans to develop a new 135-room Scandic Go hotel on Stockholm's Drottninggatan, scheduled for completion in late 2027. The project's distinctive feature is its subterranean location, intended to provide guests with a quiet environment away from city noise. Construction is set to begin this year.

The new hotel will be situated within a building undergoing conversion from retail and warehouse space into a mixed-use property including hotel accommodation, retail, and offices. The 135 rooms, spread across four underground floors, will not have windows, while common areas and staff facilities will feature windows. Guests will check in one floor below ground level or digitally.

This development is part of Scandic's growth strategy, aiming to strengthen its presence in the expanding economy segment. The company aims to grow the Scandic Go brand through new construction, acquisitions, and diverse property types. The building will adhere to the BREEAM In-Use Excellent standard, and the hotel's operations will be certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
