Scania acquires Northvolt Systems Industrial Division to boost electrification

Updated May 15, 2024 – Vehicle manufacturer Scania has acquired the Industrial Division of Northvolt Systems, enhancing its capacity to deliver electrified solutions for the heavy-duty and off-road sectors. The transaction brings approximately 260 employees and operations, including a production facility in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D center in Stockholm, Sweden, into Scania's structure.

The acquired division specializes in developing and manufacturing battery systems for industrial and off-highway applications. Its portfolio includes battery modules and systems for material handling, construction equipment, and mining. This business unit will operate as a partner to Scania Power Solutions.

Scania aims to strengthen its electrification offerings, particularly for off-road applications like construction machinery. This move complements Scania's long-standing expertise in powertrain innovation and aligns with its strategy to expand its range of electrified drive systems.

The acquisition focuses on securing production capacity and battery system expertise. Scania has not disclosed the purchase price but has agreed to ensure the continuation of operations. The company views this as a measure to enhance its long-term competitiveness and contribute to a more sustainable transport system through its Scania Ventures and New Business unit.
