Scania and ABB E-mobility test megawatt charging system
Scania and ABB E-mobility have successfully tested a megawatt charging system (MCS) for new-generation electric trucks. The technology aims to significantly reduce charging times.
Scania and ABB E-mobility have successfully completed the first test of a megawatt charging system (MCS) designed for electric trucks. This development marks a significant step towards more efficient charging solutions for heavy-duty transport, aiming to halve charging times.
The tests focused on high-current charging of electric trucks, which is essential for long-haul transport. The system is expected to support charging at 1500 amperes and evolve to the full MCS standard of 3000 amperes. The MCS standard is anticipated to be implemented in 2024.
"We are witnessing the evolution of electric transport. Our goal is for 50 percent of our sales to be electric vehicles by 2030. Achieving this target requires adequate infrastructure, and MCS technology is a key component in its development," stated Fredrik Allard, Head of Electrification at Scania.
ABB E-mobility, a global leader in EV charging solutions, has invested alongside Scania in the development and implementation of the MCS standard. Both companies are working to advance the electrification of heavy-duty transport, which accounts for 40 percent of global road transport carbon emissions.
