Scania and Fortescue to Develop Autonomous Mining Road Train

Swedish truck manufacturer Scania and Australian mining company Fortescue are partnering to develop and validate a fully integrated autonomous road train solution. The collaboration aims to address the growing demand for autonomous technologies within the global mining sector.

The joint development, testing, and validation phases will take place at Fortescue's iron ore operations in Christmas Creek, Queensland, Australia. The project will leverage Scania's experience in supplying trucks to the mining industry and Fortescue's expertise in autonomous driving.

The new autonomous solution will integrate Scania's automation technology and hardware into the Scania R770 prime mover platform. This system will be coupled with three trailers, capable of carrying a 240-tonne payload, and will be integrated with Fortescue's Fleet Management System (FMS). The objective is to optimize fleet utilization, maximize productivity, and ensure efficient energy consumption to reduce carbon emissions.

Both companies emphasize shared values in safety, operational efficiency, and reducing carbon footprints. This collaboration provides Scania with an opportunity to gain insights into autonomous operations in demanding conditions, while Fortescue seeks to enhance its productivity and cost-efficiency within its mining value chain.
