Scania and Northvolt Partner on Heavy Vehicle Battery Development
Scania and Northvolt have agreed to develop and commercialize battery cell technology for heavy commercial vehicles. Scania is investing EUR 10 million in the partnership.

Heavy vehicle manufacturer Scania and battery technology company Northvolt have entered into a partnership agreement to develop and commercialize battery cell technology for the electrification of heavy trucks and buses.
Scania announced an investment of EUR 10 million in the agreement. This funding will support the further development and establishment of Northvolt's demonstration line and research facility. The collaboration aims to meet the increasing demand for sustainable and cost-effective battery solutions for heavy transport applications.
As part of the agreement, an expert team will be formed to work at Northvolt's research facility in Västerås, Sweden. This team will focus on developing and commercializing battery cells optimized for the requirements of heavy commercial vehicles. The companies have also signed an off-take purchase agreement for battery cells.
Scania CEO Henrik Henriksson highlighted the importance of electrification in the shift towards a fossil-free transport system. "Current battery cell technology needs further development to meet the business needs of heavy bus and truck customers. We believe that with a partner like Northvolt, we can make significant progress," Henriksson stated.
Northvolt is constructing a next-generation battery factory in Skellefteå, northern Sweden, emphasizing low carbon footprint production and recycling. The partnership with Scania is part of Scania's broader strategy to drive the transition to a sustainable transport system.
