Scania develops gearbox technology, including for electric vehicles
Scania engineer Per Arnelöf specializes in gearbox oil systems. Development continues to drive performance in heavy vehicles despite the rise of electrification.

Scania registers hundreds of patents annually, stemming from the daily innovative work of its employees. Among these is Per Arnelöf, an expert engineer at Scania R&D, whose work significantly contributes to gearbox technology, particularly its oil systems.
Arnelöf's focus is on the design and development of traditional gearboxes, including aspects like gear configuration and lubrication systems. His long tenure at Scania includes early experiences on the production line and summer jobs, leading to his current role in advanced engineering.
Currently a product owner for a value creation team, Arnelöf oversees product capacity, efficiency, and loss reduction. The team's collaborative approach, focusing on oil system knowledge sharing, accelerates problem-solving through early simulation and testing, enabling simultaneous development across multiple products.
Despite the transport industry's rapid electrification, the need for advanced gearboxes persists in electric vehicles. Arnelöf and his team are tackling the development of lubrication and cooling systems for electric motors, requiring extensive simulation and early-stage testing to adapt to this evolving technology.
Scania continues to invest in exploring new technological solutions and innovations for the future of the transport sector, aiming to continually enhance the performance and efficiency of its powertrains, including its gearboxes.
