Scania electric truck hauls 94 tonnes in Sweden
Scania has demonstrated a fully electric truck combination in Värmland, Sweden, capable of transporting a total weight of 94 tonnes. The vehicle is part of a broader initiative to electrify heavy transport within the forestry sector.
A notable transport unit is operating in the Värmland forest region of Sweden: a fully electric Scania R 450E truck towing a 33.5-meter-long combination weighing 94 tonnes. The transport is managed by the family company Broström & Son for Stora Enso.
The truck transports tens of tons of timber daily between various industrial sites. This vehicle is part of the TREE project (Transport Electrification in the Forest Industry), led by the Swedish Forest Research Institute Skogforsk. The project aims to test the viability of fully electric High Capacity Transports (HCT) in the forestry industry.
"The total cost of ownership (TCO) for an electric truck is still about 20 percent higher than for a diesel one, but the gap is narrowing as mileage increases and infrastructure develops," stated Anders Lööf, CEO of LBC Frakt, a cooperative of which Broström & Son is a member and which is expanding its electric fleet annually.
The Scania R 450E features a 624 kWh battery pack and a 450 kW (612 hp) electric motor. With a full load of 94 tonnes, its range is approximately 200 km. Charging is done via a 375 kW fast charger, taking just over an hour. Regenerative braking can generate up to 600 kW, reducing energy consumption and wear on the brakes.
