Scania Establishes Erinion Company for Charging Solutions

Scania has established a new subsidiary, Erinion, dedicated to offering charging solutions for electric heavy-duty vehicles. This strategic move aims to accelerate the adoption of electric transportation by providing customers with dedicated and semi-public charging infrastructure at their depots and destinations. Erinion plans to install a minimum of 40,000 charging points for its customers by 2030, supporting Scania's goal for electric vehicles to constitute half of its sales volume in Europe by the same year.

The newly formed company will enable customers to transition seamlessly to zero-emission fleets with reliable charging capabilities. Industry studies suggest that depot charging will be the primary energy source for both short and long-haul operations. This approach offers benefits such as predictable charging schedules, increased uptime, and cost efficiencies through stable and predictable energy costs tailored to each customer's operations.

Erinion will provide integrated hardware, software, and operational services, customized to client needs. These solutions can be acquired through a standard model or a flexible pricing structure involving down payments, financial leasing, and ongoing service fees. Scania's research indicates potential for significant cost savings, with reduced investment needs and operational savings of up to SEK 170,000 per truck annually.

Initially, Erinion will launch in Sweden, Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, France, and Germany, with a global rollout to follow. The company's services will be brand-agnostic, ensuring accessibility for all types of fleet operators. Scania anticipates 230,000 electric trucks on European roads by 2030, underscoring the need for robust charging infrastructure.
