Scania expands electrification through acquisition and investment

Vehicle manufacturer Scania is bolstering its growth and electrification strategy through two key initiatives. In early 2025, the company acquired Northvolt Systems' industrial division, which specializes in batteries for demanding off-road applications. Additionally, Scania has invested in Neutreeno, a startup developing technology for measuring emissions across value chains.

The acquisition of Northvolt Systems, comprising approximately 300 employees in Sweden and Poland, enhances Scania Power Solutions' offerings with robust battery technology. This move aims to accelerate the electrification of industrial sectors such as mining, construction, and material handling. The subsequent establishment of Scania Industrial Batteries will provide integrated battery solutions directly to customers in these specialized fields.

"With Northvolt Systems, we could immediately see customer synergies and by combining their base with ours, we could offer a more expansive solution," said Sarah Holford, Head of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) at Ventures and New Business at Scania. She highlighted that Scania's internal expertise in R&D, production, and other areas provided confidence in the decision.

In venture capital, the investment in Neutreeno exemplifies Scania's engagement with external startups. Neutreeno, a spin-off from the University of Cambridge, offers technology designed to measure Scope 3 emissions along Scania's value chain, addressing increasing industry pressure to quantify and reduce these indirect emissions. This investment supports Scania's mission for sustainable transport solutions and offers strategic value to its core business.
