Scania Introduces New Hybrid Truck Models

Scania has launched its newest generation of hybrid trucks, offering both HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) options with flexible powertrain and charging configurations. These vehicles are designed to meet diverse application demands and represent a step towards full electrification of heavy transport.

The core of the new powertrain is the GE281 electric machine, integrated with Scania's seven or nine-litre combustion engines. This setup provides up to 230 kW of continuous power and 290 kW peak power, delivering 2,100 Nm of torque through a six-speed gearbox. The new system supports Scania trucks with gross vehicle weights up to 36 tonnes, even operating purely on electric power.

Scania estimates these hybrid trucks can achieve fuel savings of up to 40% in urban environments compared to traditional powertrains. The plug-in hybrid models offer an electric range of up to 60 kilometres, with a full charge possible in approximately 30 minutes. The combustion engines, which can be downsized, are compatible with biofuels like HVO and biodiesel.

Fredrik Allard, Senior Vice President and Head of e-mobility at Scania Sales & Marketing, called the GE281 system a significant advancement for the heavy truck industry. "Our hybrids are now strong candidates for a variety of applications where sustainability and smart solutions are priorities," Allard stated. This development aligns with Scania's strategy to meet its science-based carbon reduction targets and support the Paris Agreement.
