Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV Wins Sustainable Bus Award 2027

The Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV coach has been awarded the Sustainable Bus Award 2027 in the Coach category. The prize acknowledges its plug-in hybrid platform as a solution for reducing fuel consumption by up to 47 percent and emissions by up to 94 percent in long-distance coach operations.

The jury highlighted the i6S Efficient PHEV's introduction of plug-in hybrid technology to tourist transport and long-distance coach services. The vehicle combines a 338 kW Scania Super 13-litre engine with two 145 kW electric motors and an 89 kWh lithium-ion battery. The plug-in hybrid system enables up to 70 km of electric driving, enhancing comfort and allowing compliance with zero-emission zones.

Under favorable operating conditions, the plug-in hybrid solution can reduce fuel consumption by 47 percent compared to a conventional powertrain. The coach features four driving modes: Electric, Hybrid, Charge Sustain, and Forced Charging, allowing energy management based on route characteristics and charging strategy.

Scania supports the system with a digital ecosystem offering tools for monitoring charging and range, analyzing driving style, and predictive maintenance. The battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in approximately 44 minutes. When combined with renewable fuels, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by up to 94 percent.
