Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV Wins Sustainable Bus Award 2027
The Scania Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV has been awarded the Sustainable Bus Award 2027 in the Coach category. The plug-in hybrid platform was recognized for its potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in long-distance coach operations.
Scania's Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV coach has secured the European Sustainable Bus Award 2027 in the Coach category. The award recognizes the vehicle's plug-in hybrid platform for its significant reduction in fuel consumption, up to 47 percent, and emissions, up to 94 percent, in long-distance coach operations. The coach is capable of traveling up to 70 km in electric-only mode.
The Sustainable Bus Award jury acknowledged the originality of the solution, which introduces plug-in hybrid technology to tourist and long-distance coach services. The system combines a 338 kW Scania Super engine with electric machines and an 89 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering improved driveability and environmental benefits.
Anders Liss, Global Head of Business Solutions at Scania, stated that the plug-in hybrid platform allows operators to utilize electric driving where needed or beneficial, while maintaining necessary operational range and drastically cutting costs and emissions. The vehicle features four drive modes—Electric, Hybrid, Charge Sustain, and Forced Charging—for optimized energy management based on route characteristics.
Scania supports the system with its digital ecosystem for fleet management and maintenance. The battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in approximately 44 minutes. Regenerative braking and intelligent energy management further enhance efficiency. The combustion engine's compatibility with renewable fuels, such as HVO, can further reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 94 percent.
