Scania Outlines Five Key Qualities for Potential Partners

Scania, a prominent vehicle manufacturer, is refining its strategy for advancing sustainable transport by articulating five fundamental qualities it seeks in potential partners, acquisitions, and investment opportunities. The company's Ventures and New Business (VNB) unit continuously evaluates new ventures that can expedite the transition to a more sustainable transportation system.

Scania employs two primary approaches to business innovation: mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and venture capital. M&A focuses on larger, more immediate investments or partnerships that directly bolster Scania's strategic objectives and customer offerings. Venture capital, conversely, targets smaller, early-stage startups to gain access to promising technologies and insights.

"We evaluate opportunities based on where Scania needs to be and how we get there," stated Sarah Holford, Head of Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) at Ventures and New Business. "Do we build the capability internally, or can we act faster, or deliver a better solution by buying or partnering with another company?"

The five crucial qualities identified are strategic relevance, technical expertise, shared vision, networks and synergies, and long-term potential. Scania emphasizes that deals are not pursued solely for short-term financial gain but require alignment on sustainability goals and a demonstrated capacity for scalability.

The company highlights its significant advantage in its deep technical expertise and its ability to internally validate potential partners' technical strengths. Furthermore, these partnerships and investments aim to enhance Scania's broader ecosystem, create opportunities for customer crossover, and open new markets.
