Scania targets long-haul market with new electric truck configuration

Scania is expanding the capabilities of its electric truck lineup by introducing a configuration that places battery packs behind the cab. This design change increases the installed battery capacity by approximately 356 kWh, allowing for a total range of up to 720 kilometers depending on the specific operational conditions.

This development aims to address the balance between range, payload capacity, and charging logistics that has historically hindered the adoption of electric vehicles in long-haul operations. The system is designed to work with standard European trailer configurations, ensuring that operators do not sacrifice physical space or maneuverability to achieve increased range.

In addition to the battery layout, the vehicle features a redesigned front section that reduces wind resistance. According to Scania, this aerodynamic adjustment contributes to a potential 3 percent reduction in energy consumption. The trucks are also designed to utilize Megawatt Charging System (MCS) infrastructure to minimize downtime during long journeys.
