Scania to provide 91 battery-electric buses in Sweden

Scania and transport operator VR Sweden have signed an agreement for 91 fully electric buses, marking one of the largest individual deals for electric buses in Sweden to date. The vehicles are scheduled to enter service in the Södertälje area from June 2027.

VR Sweden secured a contract from public transport authority SL to operate bus services in Södertälje and Nykvarn starting in 2025. Ahead of this commencement, the company has placed an order for 91 electric buses from Scania, which has both production facilities and its headquarters in Södertälje. This order represents Scania Sweden's largest single delivery of battery-electric vehicles to date.

The deal signifies a key step in VR Sweden's long-term commitment to sustainable public transport. For the Södertälje region, the investment continues the transition towards fossil-free bus operations, introducing modern, quiet electric buses tailored for urban environments. According to VR Sweden, this investment will reduce local emissions and improve passenger services as well as the working environment for drivers and maintenance personnel.

The buses, Fencer f1 models, are built on Scania's European-developed battery-electric bus platform. The agreement between VR and Scania encompasses the entire process, from development and planning to delivery, service, and long-term support.
