Scania Unveils Electric Truck With Up to 720 km Range

Scania is launching a battery-electric long-haul truck configuration designed to deliver a range of up to 720 kilometers. This expanded capability is achieved by combining additional battery capacity mounted behind the cab with existing chassis batteries, improved aerodynamics, and compatibility with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS).

A typical setup involves placing two MP20 battery packs behind the cab, adding approximately 356 kWh of installed capacity. This approach preserves flexibility regarding payload and overall vehicle configuration, allowing operators to balance energy needs with cargo requirements. Scania states the solution is tailored to the practical demands of long-haul operations, including distance, load, trailer compatibility, and charging strategies.

The company's solution incorporates its protruding IVD (Increased Vehicle Dimension) front. This design feature enables selected 6x2*4 tractor units to operate with standard European trailers, even when the total vehicle length exceeds 16.5 meters, while maintaining practical turning performance. The IVD front can also reduce energy consumption by up to 3% on battery-electric vehicles.

Combined with MCS fast charging, the increased energy capacity aims to make battery-electric trucks viable for more demanding freight routes that have traditionally been challenging to electrify. Scania emphasizes a systems approach, considering vehicle length, axle configuration, aerodynamics, and charging strategies alongside battery capacity to facilitate electrification of difficult-to-decarbonize transport assignments.
