Sceye and SoftBank Corp. demonstrate stratospheric connectivity in Japan

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. have concluded a demonstration of stratospheric connectivity in Japan, a significant step towards the commercialization of High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS). According to the companies, the first flight of the Sceye Service Test Program traveled through the stratosphere for over 15,000 kilometers, from New Mexico to Japan.

During the demonstration, various applications of HAPS technology were tested. The flight involved direct data transmission to devices, edge computing, and communication with drones. SoftBank Corp. confirmed that the platform returned to its base network after the flight.

These tests are part of a broader effort to utilize the stratosphere for data transmission and other services. HAPS technology has the potential to offer a cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional terrestrial networks, particularly in remote or hard-to-reach areas.

While commercialization requires further development and testing, the successful demonstration in Japan highlights the technology's potential. The goal is to provide reliable and widespread network connectivity using airborne platforms.
