Technology firm Sceye and Japanese telecommunications company SoftBank Corp. have advanced the commercialization of stratospheric high-altitude platform stations (HAPS). The companies successfully demonstrated data connectivity over Japan using Sceye's HAPS technology.
The test flight, part of Sceye's service program trials, spanned over 15,000 kilometers. Flights originated in New Mexico, USA, and concluded in Japan, establishing a connection to SoftBank's core network. The demonstration validated both direct-to-device (D2D) capabilities and edge computing functionalities.
This achievement marks a significant step towards the broader adoption of HAPS technology. HAPS platforms operate in the stratosphere at approximately 20 kilometers altitude, offering the potential to provide broadband connectivity to remote or underserved areas where traditional terrestrial networks are challenging to deploy. They can also serve as a complementary layer to existing mobile networks.
Sceye is now focusing on developing commercial services, with further test results expected from upcoming flights. SoftBank's involvement highlights the operator's interest in emerging network technologies and the potential applications for HAPS in enhancing connectivity solutions.
