Sceye and SoftBank Demonstrate Stratospheric Connectivity in Japan

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. have completed a successful stratospheric connectivity demonstration in Japan, marking a significant step towards the commercialization of High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS).

The test flight involved Sceye's equipment traveling over 15,000 kilometers from New Mexico to Japan within the stratosphere. Connectivity was backhauled into SoftBank Corp.'s core network. The demonstration validated direct-to-device capabilities and edge computing functionalities.

Additionally, HAPS-based communications with drones were verified. This type of high-altitude communication has the potential to extend the coverage of mobile networks and provide services to areas lacking traditional network infrastructure.

The first mission of Sceye's Service Test Program showcased the potential for direct device connectivity from the stratosphere and enabled advanced computing solutions in the atmosphere. This opens avenues for new applications in mobility, disaster management, and other fields.
