Sceye and SoftBank Test Stratospheric Communications in Japan

Sceye and SoftBank Corp. have successfully conducted demonstration tests in Japan, focusing on stratospheric High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) communication technology. The tests are a step towards the commercialization of these services.

During the trials, Sceye's platform flew over 15,000 kilometers in the stratosphere from New Mexico to Japan. It successfully connected to SoftBank Corp.'s terrestrial network, allowing for tests of Direct-to-Device (D2D) capabilities. The objective was to verify the potential for delivering broadband connectivity to areas with limited or no existing network infrastructure.

This technology is expected to enhance network coverage and offer new service possibilities, particularly in disaster-stricken areas or remote regions lacking reliable connectivity. Sceye develops aircraft that operate in the stratosphere, functioning similarly to satellites but with the potential for lower latency and more flexible deployment.

The completion of these tests is a significant part of the broader strategy to bring HAPS technology to market. The collaboration with SoftBank in Japan is considered a crucial phase in preparing for future commercial services.
