Schleswig-Holstein seeks Net Zero Valley status to attract industry

The German state of Schleswig-Holstein has formally applied for recognition as a European model region under the Net Zero Valley initiative. Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt presented the application this week, aiming to leverage easier access to EU funding and streamlined permitting processes to attract sustainable industrial firms.

Development agencies have identified the districts of Dithmarschen and Steinburg as focal points for this expansion. Industry experts highlight the region between Heide, Brunsbüttel, and Itzehoe as a prime location for sectors such as battery storage, hydrogen production, and biofuels due to its industrial potential and proximity to energy infrastructure.

Concrete plans are already emerging, with energy provider Varem Energie targeting 2030 for the production of biomethane from waste products in Brunsbüttel. New developments are being strategically planned near electrical substations to accommodate the high energy demands of these industries. Germany currently hosts three other regions with Net Zero Valley status, located in Brandenburg, Saxony, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia.
