Schleswig-Holstein's Population Grows Primarily Due to In-Migration

The population of Schleswig-Holstein stood at nearly 2.96 million inhabitants at the end of 2024, according to Statistikamt Nord. This represents an increase of approximately 6,300 people compared to the preceding year. The primary driver for this growth was in-migration, a trend that also characterized the previous year.

Over 105,000 people moved into the state between the seas last year. While thousands also departed, the net effect of migration resulted in a statistical population increase. Areas surrounding Hamburg, particularly the districts of Pinneberg and Segeberg, experienced notable population growth.

The number of deaths exceeded births. Statistics show that approximately 21,800 children were born in the state last year, contrasted with over 38,800 registered deaths. Consequently, births alone would not be sufficient to sustain population growth.

The figures from Statistikamt Nord are based on the official population count following the 2022 census. Detailed population data for individual districts and independent cities will be released at a later date.
