School Cell Phone Bans Show Little Impact on Academic Performance
A recent study indicates that the growing trend of cell phone bans in schools has not led to significant improvements in student test scores or reductions in bullying.
Despite a surge in schools implementing cell phone bans, new research suggests these policies are not yielding expected academic benefits. A study by Stanford University and the National Bureau of Economic Research found negligible effects on test scores in schools that have enforced bans for three years.
The research team, including Duke University economics professor Jason Baron, expressed surprise at the findings. Initially, they anticipated improved academic outcomes, reasoning that removing distractions would naturally enhance student focus. However, the data did not support this hypothesis.
Beyond test scores, the study also found little evidence that phone restrictions improved other school environment metrics. Attendance rates, including chronic absenteeism, remained largely unchanged. Similarly, there were no statistically significant shifts in reported online bullying or classroom attention.
While the study's data on bullying was based on a smaller sample and caution is advised, Baron noted that banning phones within school hours may not address the root causes of bullying, as students still have access to devices outside of school. Some schools have, however, observed improvements in student well-being in the third year of the ban.
Public support for school cell phone bans remains high, with over three-quarters of US adults favoring them. Currently, more than 30 states have implemented some form of restriction on cell phone use in classrooms.
