Sean Parker is rebuilding Stability AI around music

Sean Parker, co-founder of the pioneering music-sharing service Napster, is now directing AI company Stability AI towards music-focused applications. Having previously experienced both success and disruption in the music industry, Parker aims to leverage AI to create new tools for music professionals.

Stability AI, previously known for its image generation model Stable Diffusion, faced significant financial challenges and internal turmoil after its founder's departure. Parker joined the company's rescue efforts two years ago and, alongside CEO Prem Akkaraju, is spearheading a strategic pivot. The new direction aims to establish Stability AI as a primary provider of AI-powered tools for musicians, producers, and other industry professionals.

In late August, Stability AI announced it had secured $76 million in funding from investors including major music labels such as Sony, Warner, and Universal. As part of the funding round, these labels have also licensed their music catalogs to Stability AI for use in training its AI models. This capital infusion has enabled the company to release three new audio models and AI-driven music editing software.

The company's new AI models can generate entire instrumental tracks or short audio snippets from text prompts. Parker stated that an upcoming update will allow users to guide the AI by humming a melody or beatboxing a drum pattern. This advancement is expected to streamline music creation and offer novel creative possibilities for artists.
