Search volume for skin barrier repair spikes as New York enters heating season
Data from Google Trends shows a 900% increase in searches for skin barrier repair in New York, coinciding with the mandatory start of the city's heating season.
New York City’s transition to its mandated heating season has triggered a sharp rise in consumer concern regarding skin health. According to Google Trends, searches for "skin barrier repair" have surged by 900% over the past year. City regulations require residential buildings to maintain indoor temperatures, creating a cycle of fluctuating humidity as residents move between dry, heated interiors and cold outdoor air.
Aleya Bamdad, founder of Laser by Aleya in Great Neck, notes that irritation is frequently caused by environmental stressors, leading to symptoms such as stinging, tightness, and redness. Practitioners suggest that when the skin barrier is compromised, consumers should pause the use of exfoliants, retinoids, and high-intensity acids to allow for recovery using mild cleansers and fragrance-free moisturizers.
Professional skin treatments are also being impacted by these environmental factors. Before performing procedures like laser hair removal or electrolysis, clinicians are increasingly screening for signs of epidermal distress. Bamdad noted that sessions are often rescheduled if the skin shows signs of inflammation to prevent potential complications, as the integrity of the skin is essential for effective treatment outcomes.
