German cybersecurity firm secunet Security Networks AG has announced that its protect4use online authentication solution effectively counters the Godfather banking trojan. This malware targets Android users by compromising banking applications to steal login credentials.
The Godfather trojan is designed to intercept sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and transaction authentication numbers (TANs). However, secunet protect4use prevents such data theft. The solution leverages a secure implementation of two-factor authentication, where the authentication factors are generated and managed within the Android operating system's Keystore.
These factors are not transferable and can only be verified by an authenticated secunet protect4use server. This mechanism ensures that even if malware is present on the device, it cannot successfully authorize or authenticate transactions. The system combines distinct factors, such as something the user knows and something the user possesses, in a way that is resistant to interception.
