Essen, Germany – Secunet Security Networks AG has announced that its Session Border Controller (SBC) has received approvals for use within NATO and the European Union. This builds upon the solution's existing German national approval (VS-NfD) and Common Criteria EAL4+ certification.

The new approvals allow authorities, armed forces, and companies to securely connect Voice over IP (VoIP) networks, facilitating the sharing of information classified as NATO RESTRICTED and RESTREINT UE/EU RESTRICTED via VoIP telephony and video conferencing. The announcement was made at the it-sa IT security trade fair in Nuremberg.

"The NATO and EU approval of the secunet SBC is a sign of greater digital sovereignty at European and multinational level," stated Dr. Kai Martius, Chief Technology Officer at Secunet. "The ability to make secure VoIP calls and use modern tools for voice communication, even with classified content, also boosts efficiency and resilience."

The secunet SBC operates at network transitions, forwarding or rejecting VoIP calls based on security criteria to ensure tap-proof communication. The system also monitors VoIP traffic to protect against attacks. The company notes that end devices with appropriate approvals, such as those offered by secunet's SINA portfolio, are also required for fully secure VoIP communication involving classified content.
