Security guards stationed outside prominent AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have voted to authorize a strike, signaling a potential work stoppage if contract negotiations fail. The unionized workers, represented by SEIU-United Service Workers West, provide essential building security for these tech giants, as well as for companies like Salesforce and Google.
The union has been in contract talks with major security contractors, including Allied Universal and Securitas. Negotiations have reportedly stalled over pay and benefits. SEIU-USWW is pushing for a $30 minimum wage and expanded healthcare, citing an offer from Allied Universal that includes a mere 25-cent raise in 2027 after three years without increases. Union president David Huerta has condemned this offer as "shameful" and "deeply disrespectful."
These security workers have voiced concerns about affording the high cost of living in the Bay Area. In anticipation of a potential strike, Anthropic reportedly advised its employees to work from home. The critical role of these guards has grown amid increasing scrutiny of AI development and rising threats against tech employees, including high-profile executives.
