Securly adds controls to block Google AI search summaries in K-12 schools

K-12 student safety provider Securly has expanded its filtering capabilities to give school administrators control over Google’s generative AI search features. The update allows schools to block both the standalone AI Mode and the AI Overview summaries that appear at the top of standard Google search results.

This functionality addresses concerns from school districts regarding the integration of automated AI responses into everyday search queries. According to Securly CTO Spence Mallder, the update is designed to empower educators to decide whether AI search features are appropriate based on the specific needs of different age groups or classrooms, rather than defaulting to Google's automatic settings.

Beyond restricting access, Securly provides an AI transparency module that tracks student interactions with various AI platforms. Data from the firm shows that between December 2025 and October 2026, the tool monitored over 6.2 million student AI interactions across 1,806 school districts, helping administrators establish guardrails for AI use.
