SEIU Local 2: Dexterra Cleaners Vote to Strike in Vancouver
SEIU Local 2 unionized cleaners have unanimously voted to strike on Thursday, April 2. The strike will begin at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet near the airport.
Janitorial members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2 will begin a strike on Thursday, April 2, following Dexterra Group's refusal to negotiate a fair wage. The workers initiated negotiations for a new contract in November 2025.
The strike is scheduled to commence at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, located at 1000-7899 Templeton Station Rd, Richmond, near Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The striking workers are employed as cleaners at this prominent shopping destination.
Dexterra Group, the employer of these cleaners, has informed the workers that meeting their wage demands would necessitate a reduction in their benefits. The union represents 54 Dexterra cleaners who work across various sites in the Vancouver area, including 31 Coast Capital Credit Union branches, the MDA Space building, and the CRA building on Terminal Avenue.
The workers are seeking a total wage increase of $3.20 over the next three years, aiming for a wage of $22.77 by June 2028 for most employees. Dexterra Group has recently faced scrutiny due to concerns raised by their SkyTrain cleaners regarding worker and public safety, as well as allegations of bullying and harassment by management.
