Semiconductor Giants Invest Record Sums in Startups

Leading semiconductor companies have significantly increased their investment in startups during 2026, participating in funding rounds collectively valued at over $250 billion. This marks a substantial increase compared to previous years, fueled by record earnings and valuations driven by massive AI spending.

Major chip manufacturers are actively leading and co-leading significant financing rounds. Notably, Nvidia was among eight lead investors in OpenAI's $122 billion funding round in March. While this single deal accounts for over 95% of the total value of semiconductor-led financings this year, other substantial investments have been made. For instance, Nvidia invested $5 billion in AI startup Safe Superintelligence in July.

Cumulatively, semiconductor giants have backed more than 60 startup financings exceeding $100 million in 2026. Sixteen of these rounds were valued at over $1 billion. Nvidia has emerged as the most active corporate investor, participating in 59 known funding rounds this year, surpassing its 2025 total.

Other prominent investors include AMD, which has been involved in 19 startup financings, with at least four rounds valued above $1 billion. Samsung has also shown strong activity with at least 17 known startup investments. These figures do not capture the full extent of the sector's venture capital involvement, as some companies invest through external venture funds.

The semiconductor sector's profitability is expected to sustain its robust investment in startups. As industry giants' valuations continue to rise, their investments in emerging companies may appear relatively modest in comparison.
